honda skydeck concept
In developing this six-seater concept, Honda wondered if it could create a package that would appeal to a wide range of ages and lifestyles, a sort of bridge between the extreme-sports crew and the shuffleboard set. To that end, the company threw something at it from every age-related stereotype: nesting mesh seats to cushion the backside of the Miami retiree; Lambo-style front scissor doors for the homies and minivan-style sliding doors at the back for gramps; and, finally, a hybrid powertrain for everyone’s conscience. It’s the last word in intergenerational bonding, and it will never, ever, come to the U.S.
What might Honda do for a sequel to the Odyssey minivan, or for something larger than the upcoming Accord Crosstour wagon? Some potential might be in the Honda Skydeck concept that will debut at the Tokyo auto show.
Honda has given us a look at the concept but has not released many details. We know that it has seats for six people, uses a hybrid powertrain and makes use of both sliding and scissor-wing doors.
The Skydeck's obviously a hybrid. We mean, come on, this is a concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show. But the story's not in the powertrain or the exterior design — this is a people moving concept car after all. No, the interior's the thing here. So pull off those sliding and scissoring doors and let's look at a passenger cabin that looks like what would happen if Ikea designed a car interior entirely out of balsa wood and pieces of ASIMO. Still, there's a certain beauty to the uber-minimalist interior and its center-mounted stackable floating seats for easier access to the third row. Passengers can then soak up the sun through the breathtaking all-glass roof, or just sit back and relax.
